Camberley 17 - Teddington 5

1st Nov 2008

In revolting conditions at Watchetts, Camberley struggled early on to impose any great control on the game, despite appearing to be the stronger side. The cold, wet and windy conditions were not conducive to any flowing handling or lengthy sequences of phases with both sides making many errors. By half time, Camberley had a sole try from Chris Kaye to show to cancel out a Teddington effort following some sloppy Camberley defence early on.

In the second half, Camberley really tightened things up and applied far more determined rigour in both attack and defence. Despite some baffling and weak work from a debutant referee, especially in failing to control Teddington in the loose, control was increasingly gained and after growing pressure Camberley scored to fine tries through “Farnborough guest” Dean Pritchard and a scorching 30 yard solo sprint by Andy Morgan. The latter was converted when Stuart Johnson finally found his range!

Teddington, despite constant infringement, were never able to do much more than hold Camberley off in the second half and with a little more discipline and attention to playing to the referee, the score would have been higher. None the less, it was a satisfying win after a vastly improved team performance and one that should give confidence for the fixtures ahead.

Camberley 39 -  Guildford 3rd XV 17

October 14th, 2008
So Saturday was a warm and sunny affair, again. Guildford looked like a talented, young and fit side and were warming up nearly an hour before kickoff. I can't help but think that our relaxed attitude to Saturdays game helped us as we warmed up for about 25-30 minutes.

The game started well for us as we kicked off, Mr Morgan (8) tackled the catcher and it was a devastating tackle that no-one on the pitch or the side lines could ignore. That set the tone for the game and we won lots of lineout, ruck and scrum ball.
A penalty allowed us to take the lead in the first half and we went on to score 3 tries and convert 2 of them. Guildford were not out of it by any means as half time drew close the scored a try and looked dangerous near our line. So with a tally of 2 tries and one conversion we went into half time 22-12.

The second half was a good game, mared with a few handbags being thrown about. two yellow cards and a red spoilt some great rugby, that saw another 3 tries from Camberley, 1 of which we converted and 1 more from Guildford.

Full time score was 39-17 to Camberley 3rd XV

Well done team, a great result for the game

Battersea Ironside   8-21  Camberley

October 4th, 2008
An overcast and chilly lunch time greeted us as we left Camberley to get to BI's clubhouse. 1 hour and 45 minutes later we arrived a little tired from the drive. That did not dampen our drive to put the first win on the sheets for the season.

Having been given a generous four minutes to warm-up we them got right into the game.

The first half could have been a familiar start for us with BI making a break through out bank line and heading for the corner. Joffer did a great job of tackling the guy into touch and we won the lineout to take us back up the pitch. It was fairly even in the first half, they go pinged for offside a whole bunch of times and we got nervous with the ball in hand and just made handling errors that saw us pushed back. Half time score was 0-0. Hardly the result we were looking for, but they hadn't scored against us and hadn't looked like they could either.

Seconds out round two. Started on a much more positive note for us we got over for a try from Smithy. converted like all the rest by Stuart from a drop kick, 0-7. We then got another try when Chris ran in from the 22, 0-14. the tide had turned and we were on a roll. A little bit of frustration and the ref pinged us with a penalty. A great kick saw it over the posts and BI heads are up again. 3-14. With our newest player now taking the field and the scrum uncontested we changed the scrum every time to make sure we could use the position we were in. They got past us and tired legs meant that we didn't chase it as well we might and they scored a try, but not the conversion, 8-14. There was still plenty of energy left (I wish) and I got hold of the ball about 10 metres out from their line. Ran into the tackle and tried to stay up. The maul then got pushed over the line and John (newest player) grounds the ball for his debut try. converted by Stuarts boot again the score finished 8-21.

We are rightly proud of our game but realise we have stuff to work on. Guildford next week will not be easy.

Camberley   42-21  Old Pauline
September 13th, 2008

Our home advantage didn't turn up for this game. We played much better than the week before and should have put more points on the board. A fairly even game was not reflected in the score line. Some handling and defensive errors left the door open and Old Pauline exploited these gaps well.
A better difference than last week and something to build on. We aim to keep this going in the same direction and win next time out against Battersea Ironsides 3.

Chobham 3  41-3  Camberley 3

September 13th, 2008

A tough start to the season playing away at Chobham. Downhill in the first half we had a great push on in the scrum but failed to cross over after 20 minutes camped like a roman army on their try line. Uphill in the second half and our lack of pre-season fitness really showed.
