Review of 2005/06 season

Following promotion from South East 2 in the previous season Camberley Ladies had what we can call a successful season finishing fourth in their new division. At times the standard of rugby left a little to be desired, however, with more wins than loses, lots of tries scored and one of the most resilient defences in the division this season should see the Ladies finishing high in the table once more.

2006/07 season

Following a successul 2005/06 season, and an even more successful summer 7's the Ladies were on a high entering their pre-season warm up. With games against Guildford (17-0, win), Canterbury (71-0, win), and Trojans (29-15, win) the mood in training was very good. Although establishing substantial wins in all three pre-season matches thier was still work to do. With a tough first league match against Blackheath away in the not so distant future training was all that was left to prepare the Ladies for their league competition.

Review:

Having had such a successful pre-season warm up Camberley Ladies were looking forward to opening their league campaign for 2006/07. With Blackheath away as the first game it was always going to be tough, but no-one knew how tough until the game started. Blackheath took the lead from a penalty 'tap' in the first 15 mins, to score a try leaving Camberley 5-0 down. The Camberley defencwe held strong for the following 55 mins surviving injury and a sin bin. Following a bout of physical forwards work Blackheath broke the Camberley defence once more to score their second try of the game. With only 7 players playing in their correct position at any one time Camberley found it difficult to create anything inspiring, with only a couple of good attacking runs throughout the whole game.

A valiant effort from a severley depleted team.

Review: As I was away we've pulled together a match report of sorts. Enjoy!

Um... we scored and converted but they scored a penalty.

Toward the 60th minute Hove attacked the Camberley 22 for about 10mins but on a line out they had on player extra so Camberley got a penalty and booted it back in their 22...

um... um... um... um...

Camberley created a tonne of chances but didnt quite get their offloads quick enough to make Hove pay. Hove defended well but the Camberley rucking was good. Clare Denison missed a penalty in about 50 minute before Hove began to apply more pressure.

Review:

Playing at Frimley Lodge Park resulted in the pitch being the only part of the field that hadn't had the grass cut, and a 2nd league win for Camberley Ladies. Yet another tough game saw the teams newcomers shine, and the oldies use their knowledge and experience to create more than enough chances that should have seen Camberley run away with the game. However, Harlequins dominated the first 20 minutes of the game, only to be denied by some tough defending and a penalty miss. Once Camberley got their mitts on theball hard work, and determination became a try for inside centre Debbie Haydon, followed by conversion by fly half Clare Denison. Half time saw the turn around in pitch ends but not in fortunes for either team. Harlequins put points on the board with a penalty and Camberley continued to threaten the Harlequins try line only to be denied a 2nd try. In another low scoring game Camberley forced out a win. Special mentions must however go to Helen Blundell who played her first ever game of rugby, and only really seemed confused once in her first 60 mins, and to Allison and Ruth who are also new to the game and the team. Congratulations to all the girls. Lets keep up the winning streak.

Chesham

38-0

Review:

After a slow start to their season it would seem that Camberley Ladies have found their feet after storming to a 38-0 victory over Chesham on Sunday. The first of their six tries came from some much improved forwards work, releasing the backs into open space. Georgie Crabb drew in two opposition players to open up the wing for Jess Maurad to scream through and open the scoring in the corner of the field. Chesham were not downhearted and came back strong only for Cambs steadfast defence to deny them any chance of scoring. Minutes later Captain Sheree Crabb crossed the try line for Cambs second score of the day. A simple pick and some hard running off the back of the scrum produced a fantastic individual try. The conversion form Fly Half Clare Denison saw the score extended to 12-0. With half time approaching and very little pressure from Chesham Cambs were on hand score their third and final try of the half. Some intense rucking from the Cambs pack produced quick ball for outside centre Lisa Goldsmith, who drew players, and in turn created space for Sarah Sanderson to break through. A quick pass out of the tackle concluded the move with a 50 yard sprint to the line when the ball reached Debbie Haydon who dissected the Chesham defensive wall with a precise and powerful run. The conversion saw the half time whistle and time for Cambs to reflect. The second half saw Chesham come out fighting but to no avail. Cambs held their defence winning possession of the ball at every opportunity. This hard work paid off when the fourth try of the game was scored. A down field kick from Denison was chased by Maurad and Goldsmith. A tap through from Maurad allowed Goldsmith to use her feet to their full potential and dribble the ball down to the dead ball zone and score her first try of the season. The following period of time saw Cambs grow frustrated as Chesham managed to hold up three try attempts with some valiant defending, until a second try from Goldsmith emerged. Quick ball from some awesome Cambs scrummaging saw Denison make the pass to Goldsmith whose run split the Chesham defensive line once more to score between the posts. Another Denison conversion saw the score rise to 31-0. Goldsmith was denied her hatrick later in the game following a steal in the middle of the park and some more football skills demonstrated until she was bundled off the ball on the try line, and although supported by Maurad no try was scored. With confidence brimming Cambs suffered their only knock back in the game when influential No. 8 Kate Chapman was carried from the pitch with a severely sprained ankle. This momentarily left Cambs with a 7-man scrum. However, nothing could phase the pack that had their best game of the season. Out-numbered, and against fresh legs Cambs fought hard to win every scrum. With nothing left to do but score a try that’s exactly what they did. Strong scrimmaging released the ball for stand in No. 8 Kate Goyder to pick the ball and make a bee line for the try line. Some quick feet and a couple of hand offs saw Goyder score on her debut, after demolishing the Chesham defence. The final conversion took the score to 38-0 and that’s how the game finished. An outstanding team performance over all produced Cambs biggest win of the season so far. The forwards were awesome, especially considering they were missing their line out jumper; however, Sarah-Jane Carter stepped in and pulled out an immense performance with Cambs rarely losing line out ball. Special mentions go out to Ruth O’Brien who made only her second ever appearance on a rugby pitch, and has quickly been nick-named ‘the human homing missile’ for her efforts, to Kate Goyder who not only scored the first forward try of the season but also produced a master class in tackling, and finally to Clare Denison who pulled a royal performance out of the bag and bossed the game from start to finish.

Review:

On the back of a winning streak Camberley faced the long and arduous journey to Lakenham Hewitt. Taking to the pitch Camberley received the ball and promptly went and set up camp in the Lakenham Hewitt half of the pitch. Following a rather dubious hand off Lakenham however broke the Camberley defensive line to score their first try of the game. The conversion left the score at 7-0. Again Camberley swiftly took homage in the Lakenham half only to be denied by a strong defensive line. Half time saw the turn around in pitch ends but not in the Camberley fortunes. Camberley dominated to no avail. After about 20 minutes Lakenham drove a scrum over the Camberley try line to score again. 14-0 is how the game finished. With some questionable refereeing and a weakened team Camberley played well.

According to Lakenham we’re tougher opposition than Blackheath, which just goes to show how far we’ve come since last season.

Special mentions must go to Lisa Goldsmith, Sarah Sanderson, and Vicky Bailey who all played out of position in the pack. Also, to Georgie Crabb who had another outstanding performance. Sarah-Jane Carter pulled tout a performance of the season receiving Forward of the Match; and newbie Allison should be setting up her own tackling master class soon after receiving Back of the Match.

Review:

An awesome team display from backs and forwards helped secure Camberley’s finest victory of the season so far. With London Welsh kicking off the game to Camberley not knowing the immense level of determination to beat them that was waiting… From the kick off the ball was safely collected and driven in by the Camberley forwards, and after a couple of successful rucks the ball was shipped from Sheree, through Claire, to unleash the backs. Just inside Camberley’s half the break began with Denise sprinting through a gap, cutting the Welsh defence in half, to put 5 points on the board within the opening five minutes. Claire soon making it 7 with a clinical conversion. The game followed a similar structure throughout, with Welsh committing many players to their rucks allowing them to retain possession for significant periods but Camberley’s defence proved solid - Welsh made little ground and in some cases were driven backwards. The ball was stolen on numerous occasions as Camberley operated a blitz defence closing down the number 9 and 10 before they had a chance to react and offload. Strength from Kate Chapman and Goyder was crucial in wrapping players up to allow the other forwards the chance to ruck through. The second try of the game was scored in similar fashion to the first by Debbie, who ran excellent lines all afternoon and was able to hit the gap created by the backs move and to capitalise on the space in front of her. The scrums early on were dominated by Camberley winning their own scrums and turning Welsh’s over. Welsh did hit back towards the second half but they were still no match for the Camberley pack. The lineout for Camberley worked well with SJ giving the needed height to win the majority of ball. Camberley’s third try came from an outstanding individual effort from Georgie. After a break by the Welsh winger the ball was turned over and collected on the back foot in the 22. Georgie then sprinted the length of the pitch past 3 or 4 of the Welsh’s would-be defenders to score her first of 2 try’s. Half time came and went with Camberley kicking off, with the resultant catch fumbled by the Welsh midfield and pounced on by Camberley. A number of quick offloads allowed Goyder the chance to put a well worked try under the posts. Another excellent try, again from a re-start, by Camberley. The last two tries were scored by breaks from Debbie and Denise with the backs using the ball to great effect. In between Welsh scored a well deserved try, by persistently scooping the ball from rucks until one of the backs slipped through, down the side of the ruck, to put 5 points on the board.

Overall an exceptional team performance by Camberley in what was an enjoyable afternoon. The final score, 38 – 5.

After a long Christmas break Camberley were feeling fresh to take on the challenge of Hove as their first game back. A tough game saw the Ladies pull out a fantastic team performance to triumph. A first half sin binning for Lisa Goldsmith put pressure on Camberley after they took an early lead after what can only be describes as a team try. The fourteen held well only conceeding one try. A few more points were added in the first half, with Camberley going in ahead at half time. The second half saw both teams put points on the board with tries from both Clare Denison and Denise Walsh. Hove hit back with a couple of their own but the final score of Camberley's closest game so far this season resulted in Camberleys favour with tham winning the match 26-25.

Review:

Wanting to keep their winning run going in the new year Camberley went into this game with their heads held high and mind focused strongly on the game in hand. Some quick points on the board from Kerry Gaffney and Clare Denison helped Camberley's confidence. The backs and forwards combined well to produce a first half performance worthing of being filmed for future reference! Half time saw a turn around in ends but not in fortunes. Quins pushed strong, threatening once or twice but not really threatening the Ladies. A third try, from Lisa Goldsmith, helped extend the Ladies lead. A twenty minute period of open play resulted in Camberley conceeding two tries, but not the game. Going on to win the game 29-19. An awesome team effort brought the Ladies through another tough game with outstanding performances from the entire pack, and some creative workings form the back line - Camberley looked untouchable at times.

Review:

Camberley were joined in this friendly fixture by a few of the Richmond girls in a bid to beat the army team on a wet and windy afternoon. Camberley kicked to open the game and from the start dominated, showing little or no signs of a team who had never played together before. Good strong forwards play meant Camberley's dominance paid off with an opening try within the first 5 minutes of the game. Camberley continued to impose themselves on the opposition throughout the first 40 minutes with the backs being released to break the Sandhurst lines on several occasions. Good switch play and kicking by the Camberley 10 exploited the gap left by the Sandhurst Full Back, opening the opposition to further counter attacks. The half time score was 20 - 0 and reflected the play.

Sandhurst kicked to start the second half and not for the first time failed to make the required ten metres, Camberley capitalised on these unforced errors to increase their lead during the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Using the whole width and breaking lines worked in Camberley's favour with the opposition wondering how to respond. Sandhurst won many of the line outs but didn't really threaten until the last fifteen minutes. Scrums had become uncontested and Sandhurst used this to their advantage to enjoy some time in Camberley's half. This was rewarded by a try and Sandhurst were awarded their 5 points of the game. However Camberley had done enough in the first 70 minutes to secure a comfortable victory, and it did not at any stage look like this was a game they would lose.

Camberley approached this game knowing it was to be hard fought. With missing players including the number 9,10 and full back, a number of new inexperienced players took up the job of putting in a fight for Camberley. Camberley lost a second row within minutes of the game, but the scrums remained strong with Sarah Burgess replacing the injured Dee.London Welsh played a very strong game and hand the upper hand on a number of occasions in rucks and mauls, and also put immense pressure on the Camberley jumpers in the lineouts. Camberley defence held strong where it could, and the lack of a London Welsh kicker kept the score down. Half time saw Camberley subs including Helen (who made her first appearance in the 2nd row) off for Sophie.

Camberley had two or three good attempts in the opponents half, one of which seemed certain when the backs combined to leave a two-man overlap on the wing but a crucial last minute tackle by Welsh ensured they kept a clean sheet. On the other occasions Camberley made it past the 22, only to see the Welsh defence hold strong before losing the ball in a ruck and Welsh kick it back over the Camberley heads.

Camberley battled to the end on a great pitch and mentions to Sarah-Jane who played with a number of different second row partners (incl. Dee, Kate, Sarah Burgess, Helen and Vicki!) and secured forward of the match for her performance, Sophie who came back from injury to play a full 40 minute half, Lisa who stepped in at 10, Siobhan who did an excellent job at 9 and Jess who played at number 15.

Review: More to follow but...

Excellent effort throughout the game, against a strong Lakenham side, in completely different conditions to previously. Scores were a good penalty taken by Claire Denison (10) and an excellent chip and chase from Lisa Goldsmith and Georgina Crabb.  Good natured game with thanks to Lakenham for enduring the long journey down to Camberley twice in one season
